SAN FRANCISCO DECORATOR SHOWCASE 2025

Welcome to “The Nest” – every teenage girl’s dream bedroom. The word nest brings to mind a warm and safe environment, and also a place from which to launch, which perfectly describes these special teenage years – not quite ready to strip away the childhood sweetness while flying towards young womanhood.  To support this idea, we selected a soft grey color palette and wrapped the walls in a paper adorned with stylized birds.  A bright green and gold custom headboard anchors the room, and a modern canopy drapes on either side of the bed, which adds a touch of whimsy to the space. Sculptural furniture and bold art – from a diverse group of female artists who explore concepts of femininity and activism – with colorful patterns and textures layer the room to create a space that is equally cozy and energizing. Playing off the color and pattern story of The Nest, The Jack &  Jill is a bathroom fit for siblings. Not lacking in playful personality, it is a space as functional as it is cool. Mosaic tile from Artist Tile, a custom double vanity and Waterworks fixtures ground the space with timeless features, while the green marble via DaVinci, CW Stockwell wallpaper and curated art add a touch of irreverence to an otherwise classic bathroom. With handmade wool “bubbles” and some disco flamingos roosting in the tub, the bathroom is a great place for any teen to start or end their day.

Q&A WITH ANSLEY

  • The tub is such a huge part of a small space, so we wanted to do something special with it.  I kept thinking about how to create a bubble effect, so I asked Megan Shimek, who created our wool hanging sculpture in the bedroom, what we could do.  The wool knots, splattered with colorful ink took shape and I absolutely love the result: textural, cozy and a true conversation piece.  The flamingos are personal – when I was a girl, I had an oversized pink flamingo on my wall, painted by my grandfather.  I have always loved flamingos, they are so elegant and bold, so when I came across these disco flamingos hand-made by a woman out of Denver, I knew they had to have a place in the bathtub – representing the brother and sister, they are the perfect, irreverent addition to the room.

  • We love to design with books – our whole approach is storytelling, so books naturally have to be part of our approach.  That said, we didn’t have room for a bookcase in the space, so I sought art that represented it.  Tall Stories by Pamela Stretton was so perfect for our room it felt like it was made especially for us!  Love the way it takes different shapes and textures depending on how close one is to the piece.

  • I think marble belongs in every room, in one way or another.  It can be such a dynamic addition, in small and large moments.  For the Showcase space, I wanted to play with colored marble, and green is a favorite of L+P.  We really leaned into the angular nature of the tile and had a squared edge detail and faceted side splashes to mirror the tile, and had so much fun creating a special border for our tile out of the marble.  For the bedroom, we wanted to use the same marble, but have a softer element, so the design of the desk was born through a sketching session I had with Malia – we sketched and played with scale and height to create the curves of the desk, and then anchored the desk with more angular legs, again leaning into the juxtaposition of the room: nostalgic and future-looking, romantic and modern, etc.

  • To inspire our teen girl, we designed a room filled with art and adornments from women of the art world, with several of the artists inspecting and reframing the idea of femininity and others creating a platform for design focused on products made by women.See detailed art and artist brief HERE

  • This is a much more feminine space than L+P typically designs.  It was fun to think about the girl who would live in this room and what might speak to her.  The idea of feminine with a little cool edge was important as we blended all the different elements. Despite the space feeling very feminine, much of the art and artists featured in the room reflect upon and reframe the notion of femininity itself along with themes of beauty, consumerism and activism.

  • There’s a special connection to the creator of the lamp, Daniel Shapiro.  Megan, L+P’s Studio Director, and  Daniel used to work together in advertising at Saatchi&Saatchi. When Megan shared Daniel’s splatter lights with me a while back, I knew that we’d want to work with him and have been waiting years for it to come to fruition. It finally came together for Showcase this year and was meant to be - the piece happened to be called The Chirp lamp, which was perfect for our room called The Nest, which is a room papered in graphic birds. You can see more of Daniel’s work on display at Coup d’Etat.
