Selecting the Perfect Lighting for Each Room: A Designer’s Guide to Illuminating Your Home

Light Up Your Life, Beautifully

Lighting does more than just brighten a room—it sets the mood, highlights architectural features, and brings your personal story to life. At L+P Interiors, our philosophy is that every space tells a story, lighting is just one of the most important storytellers. It's the warm welcome of soft lighting into your home, or it's the pop of color and texture from that unique sculptural piece that makes us have to have in. Together, we take a house and make it a home!

Understanding the Basics: The Three Types of Lighting

Just prior to making recommendations for each room specifically, we should all understand the three major types of light:

Ambient Light: Your ambient light is your main light source, providing general illumination. Lighting like ceiling fixtures or recessed lights provides ambient light with a comfortable level of brightness without being invasive to your vision.

Task Light: Task lighting is focused lighting that helps with specific tasks, such as reading, cooking, or working. Examples of task lighting are desk lamps, under-cabinet lights, and pendant lights that are located over kitchen islands.

Accent Light: Accent lighting is decorative lighting that can add drama to a room or highlight architectural details, artwork, or other features in the room. Accent lights can be wall sconces and track lighting as an example.

At L+P, we always start our design discussions with the question, "What story are we telling in this space?" This question assists us with deciding the best ways to layer each of these three types of lighting together to create a positive experience in space.

Room-by-Room Breakdown

Every area within a home includes its own way to contribute – and lighting should rise to meet that purpose. From the first impression of your entryway to the quiet sanctuary of your bedroom, lighting will perform its own chapter. At L+P Interiors, we like to think intentionally about each space, combining form and function to create layered lighting compositions that elevate your lifestyle – whatever that may look like. We consider how thoughtful lighting design will play a role in each part of the home.

Living Room: Layers, Statements & Mood

The living room serves multiple functions—from entertaining guests to relaxing with a book. Therefore, versatile lighting is key.

  • Ambient: A central chandelier or ceiling-mounted fixture sets the general tone.

  • Task: Floor lamps beside reading chairs or table lamps on side tables provide focused light.

  • Accent: Wall sconces or LED strips can highlight artwork or architectural details.

In our Belvedere Bay project, we combined a vintage brass chandelier with modern floor lamps and subtle wall sconces, allowing the room to transition seamlessly from lively gatherings to cozy evenings. Explore the result in our gallery.

Kitchen: Where Form Meets Function

Kitchens are the heart of the home, bustling with activity. Effective lighting here ensures safety and enhances functionality.

  • Ambient: Recessed ceiling lights provide overall illumination.

  • Task: Pendant lights over islands and under-cabinet LEDs illuminate work surfaces.

  • Accent: Toe-kick lighting or cabinet interior lights add a touch of elegance.

We often recommend fixtures that reflect materials used in the kitchen, like a matte black pendant echoing the cabinet hardware. Need a lighting plan tailored to your kitchen’s architecture? Reach out for a design consultation.

Dining Room: Setting the Scene

Dining rooms are spaces of connection and celebration. Lighting here should create an inviting atmosphere.

  • Ambient: A statement chandelier centered over the table sets the mood.

  • Task: While not typical, adjustable lighting can be beneficial for activities like homework or games.

  • Accent: Wall sconces or buffet lamps add warmth and depth.

We often position chandeliers 30–36 inches above the table, ensuring they complement the table's size and shape. Dimmer switches are essential for adjusting the ambiance to suit the occasion.

Bedroom: Calm + Customized

Bedrooms are personal sanctuaries. Lighting should promote relaxation while accommodating activities like reading.

  • Ambient: Soft, diffused ceiling lights or pendant fixtures provide general illumination.

  • Task: Bedside lamps or wall-mounted reading lights offer focused lighting.

  • Accent: LED strips behind headboards or artwork add a subtle glow.

Light should calm, not startle. We aim for softness with a hint of drama, ensuring the bedroom remains a restful retreat. Begin a lighting and layout consultation with L+P to create bedrooms that invite rest and relaxation. Contact us here.

Bathroom: Clean, Bright, and Balanced

Bathrooms require a balance of functional and flattering lighting.

  • Ambient: Ceiling-mounted fixtures or recessed lights provide overall brightness.

  • Task: Sconces at eye level on either side of the mirror reduce shadows, ideal for grooming tasks.

  • Accent: LED strips under vanities or around mirrors add a spa-like feel.

Home Office: Focus + Flexibility

With the rise of remote work, home offices need lighting that supports productivity.

  • Ambient: Overhead lighting ensures general visibility.

  • Task: Adjustable desk lamps or swing-arm wall lights provide focused illumination.

  • Accent: Floor lamps or wall-mounted fixtures can add warmth and reduce eye strain.

Lighting supports productivity and mental clarity—especially in zones with multiple roles. Need lighting that works just as hard as you do? Let L+P Interiors help.

Entryway or Hallways: First Impressions

These transitional spaces set the tone for the rest of the home.

  • Ambient: Flush-mount or pendant fixtures provide general lighting.

  • Task: Not typically required unless the space serves a dual function.

  • Accent: Wall sconces or picture lights highlight artwork or architectural features.

At L+P, we often say entryway lighting is like punctuation—it sets the tone for the entire house. Check out the curated lighting moments from our design gallery.

Selecting the Right Fixtures: Material + Mood

It's not just about visual appeal - choosing the correct fixtures is part of the compatibility of the architecture of the home with the lifestyle of the client.

Materials: Brass, matte black, frosted glass and natural stone will always be in style.

Style: Fixtures should be consistent with the style of the room, be it modern, traditional or eclectic.

Customization: It is often our approach to source custom fixtures that reflect the personality of the clients and of the house.

Choose finishes thoughtfully – if the story and texture align, do not resist making the mix of metals, it will create depth and interest.
