Custom Furniture Design for Bay Area Homes | L+P Interiors

It can seem like an endless quest to find furniture that actually feels right in your house, in both size and spirit. The ideal piece must not only serve a purpose, but it must have a story behind it, enhance your architecture, and make it feel like it is your own and not something you found.

L+P Interiors creates one-of-a-kind furniture and design in the Bay Area and beyond, a unique combination of high-end design and livability.

Our Sausalito-based, award-winning studio has built its reputation on storytelling, making homes deeply personal through both form and function. That is also the philosophy that applies to the furniture we design.

Whether it be a hand-finished dining table that is the heart of the family get-together or a one-of-a-kind banquette that is both a unique piece of furniture and a concealed storage unit, all our pieces begin with a vision that is all about you.

Why Custom Furniture?

Bay Area houses are as diverse as the inhabitants who live in them: turn-of-the-century Victorians in San Francisco, mid-century treasures in Marin, modern high-rises in Oakland, and beach retreats along the Pacific. In such places, off-the-shelf furniture seldom fits.

Custom furniture solves that. It allows us to:

  • Work with unusual floor plans or architectural quirks.

  • Address Bay Area microclimates (salt air, intense sun, fog).

  • Maximize functionality in multi-use spaces.

  • Create proportions that actually fit the room.

And then there is the emotional payoff. Custom items tend to be heirlooms, something you keep on passing because it has value. They are designed for your own lifestyle, made using the materials you adore, and they have a story with them.

As Architectural Digest says, “Custom furniture is worth it for the comfort, quality, and personalization it offers.” (source)

When your home and lifestyle don’t fit the mold, neither should your furniture.

The L+P Interiors Approach to Custom Furniture Design

Our design style—what we call Classic with a Twist—is the sweet spot where timeless elegance meets a playful, personal edge. And when it comes to custom furniture, our process always begins with listening.

We start by learning how you live:

  • What moments matter most in your day?

  • What challenges does your current furniture create?

  • How do you want your home to feel?

Then we mix your story with the architecture of your house and the soul of the environment around. To others, that entails a minimalist, contemporary console that would be comfortable in a glass-enclosed condo over the Bay. To others, it is a farmhouse dining table that is made of century-old oak and has a silhouette that is modern yet established.

We partner with local and national crafters, such as the Bay Area woodworkers, metal fabricators, and upholstery studios, to actualize our designs. The material is selected purposefully: reclaimed wood, plaster, brass, mohair, and natural stone.

As our Founding Principal, Ansley Majit, says:

“Custom pieces aren’t about making a statement—they’re how we honor the architecture of a home while personalizing it for the people who live there.”

Our Custom Furniture Process at L+P Interiors

Designing custom furniture isn’t just about making something pretty—it’s about crafting something that works beautifully and tells your story. Here’s how we do it:

Step 1: Discovery + Intent

We begin with an in-depth conversation. This is where we learn your lifestyle, functional needs, and the emotional goals for the piece.

Example: A young family in Belvedere needed a dining banquette that could handle daily meals, homework sessions, and holiday celebrations, while hiding extra storage for table linens.

Step 2: Design Concept Development

From our notes, we create mood boards, hand sketches, and spatial mockups. We explore materials, shapes, and finishes that align with your vision and your home’s architecture. This is the stage where we lock in the piece’s personality.

Step 3: Artisan Collaboration

We invite the right craftspeople on board, many of the time, people with whom we have done several projects. We go to their workshops, test materials, and correct the construction details.

Example: In the case of a Sausalito entryway, we collaborated with a local metalworker and a master wood artisan to design a console in oxidized steel and bleached walnut. It is a storage, an object of sculptural art, and a representation of the coastal-modern style of the house.

Step 4: Prototyping + Refinement

After idea approval, we generate CAD drawings or 3D mockups. We refine details of joinery, scale, finish, and comfort. The client is integrated into the process so that each inch is perfect.

Step 5: Installation + Styling

When the piece is ready, we personally oversee its delivery and placement. Styling is key—we ensure it integrates seamlessly with your existing pieces, finishes, light, and architectural elements.

Real Homes, Real Stories: Project Highlights

St. Helena Estate

Challenge: A wide-open great room with panoramic vineyard views needed furniture that defined zones without blocking the flow.

Solution: We created an oversized, curved sofa, the shape of which is reminiscent of the wavy hills in Napa. It grounds the seating space, provides conversational angles, and adds softness to the space.

Result: A sculptural, comfortable centerpiece that draws people in while keeping the view front and center.

Sausalito Coastal Retreat

Challenge: Compact square footage, salty sea air, and a desire for luxe textures.

Solution: A custom ottoman in marine-grade velvet with hidden storage, paired with a built-in desk wrapped in bleached oak.

Result: Every inch works hard, but the space still feels indulgent and deeply personal.

Materials That Matter: Curated, Responsible, Evergreen

The best thing about designing our own furniture is that we do not have to deal with what is stocked at a showroom. We have the chance to choose materials that feel appropriate to the home, the individuals who live in it, and the tale we are trying to tell with every project.

At L+P Interiors, our material choices are guided by three principles:

  1. Beauty that lasts – We adore materials that not only look stunning on day one but also get more fascinating over time. Solid walnut that gets richer over time, brass hardware that ages to a warm patina, handwoven textiles that soften with age – these details give a home a lived-in, loved, and enduring feel.

  2. Function for real life – If a material can't withstand how you live, then it's not really a luxury. For a young family, that could mean stain-resistant performance fabrics on a bespoke banquette. For a beach house, it could be weather-tough finishes that can stand up to sea salt. We select materials that combine the elegant with the practical.

  3. Responsibility in sourcing – We primarily construct many of our pieces out of reclaimed wood, recycled stone, or hand-crafted textiles. Our partners are local Bay Area artisans who are equally keen on minimizing waste and focusing on ethical supply. As we customize, we do not produce and ship as much as mass-market furniture does.

As Business of Home notes, custom is often the more sustainable choice because it avoids the environmental cost of mass production.
